How fast does bamboo grow?

Generally bamboo will double its height within one season. The spread of the plant depends on the type and variety. Running bamboo can spread many feet away from the plant every year, while clumping bamboo tends to double the clump diameter yearly.

How far apart should I space my bamboo to create a hedge?

With larger bamboos, such as Bambusa oldhamii or Phyllostachys vivax, space four to five feet from the center of the plant. With smaller hedges, such as the Bambusa multiplex varieties, space three feet from center. On the plant descriptions see “minimum planting area” for recommended spacing.
