Jeff’s Garden in NYC

The views below are of two sets of five each “Golden” Bamboo trees (the Latin name is Phyllostachys Aurea) planted this past May in two corners of our west facing terrace. Three cedar planters were used in each corner. The rustling bamboo trees transform the ambiance of our midtown terrace.

Mike in Sugar Land, TX

I started planting bamboo last year in an effort to get rid of all my St. Augustine grass (and crab grass). So far I’ve planted 16 bamboo, 4 Queen palms, some Plumeria, bananas, and other misc. plants. My bamboo is still young, but hopefully within a few years my yard will transform from a square patch of grass to my own private jungle. I still have a long ways to go, but it is a fun project.

Thanks for the cool contest

Mike’s Bamboo Garden in Florida

I have about 30 different species of bamboo which I like to plant around my house in a artistic and decorative manner that is first and foremost pleasing to the eye in the landscape. They also function a great screens from neighbors, and add some shade from the hot Florida sun.

In the center is a large Bambusa tuldoides ‘Ventricosa’ “BUDDHA’S BELLY” enjoying its 6Th summer and giving some shade to the patio furniture and potted flowers. The tall bush with pink flowers on the left is a Crape myrtle.

The tall bamboo on the far left is a Bambusa emeiensis ‘Viridiflavus’. Just 2 years ago it was a one culm, small rhizome transplant. Now enjoying its 3rd summer it just finished putting up 17 new culms in 2007 all at once!

The bamboos on the right, have formed a wall of green, Side by side they include at the far top right, Bambusa ‘Clone X’, Phyllostachys aurea, Bambusa tuldoides “Punting Pole”, and at the bottom far right, (wish I had a wide angle lens!) is the unmistakable, beautiful, feathery, Otatea acuminata Aztecorum “Mexican Weeping” bamboo.

One more from Orlando, Florida. You know you love bamboo when you have a 38 foot tall Bambusa oldhamii to greet you at your front door. Also in front of the tree fern in the foreground is a 18″ not so tall Pogonatherum Paniceum and Variegata.

Don and Julie in Placentia, California

When we first moved to Placentia, I’ve noticed that the summers can get quite warm and that the backyard was fairly barren. I thought of solving the problem by planting bamboo to create shade so the kids can play anytime in the backyard. It didn’t take a long time to create the “canopy” of bamboo leaves. I’ve also added some tropical banana shrubs and some palm trees. When you enter our backyard, you will get the impression that of a tropical place. I’ve also added some bamboo in the front of the house. A weavers bamboo alongside alfonso karr adds an island- feel to the front of the house. A “dulcis” bamboo in a river bed setting grows on a brick path. The old-hamii is the tallest, followed by the following in order; A bambusa gibba, sea-breeze bamboo and the painted bamboo. There are other bamboos that add depth to the yard.

Ryan’s Garden in Chiba, Japan

My garden is not very big so it serves mostly as a view for when we look out our bedroom and living room windows. First i put in a tiny “pond” for small fish with bamboo as a background and framed it with the bigger rocks. Then filled the rest of the space with smaller rocks and the small green plants called “ryuu no hige” or “dragon’s beard”. The small tree over the water is a baby Japanese Pine.

Laurent’s Gardens in San Diego, CA

Good morning,

Please see attached few pictures for the contest.

I am passionate about bamboo. Unfortunately my back yard is not that big. The empty space is filled with different types of Bamboo, from golden golden to black bamboo.

Best regards,

Nathan’s Garden in American Fork, UT

I took some more pictures of my bamboo garden to add to my entry. I love it when I tell people that I grow bamboo. I usually get 2 responses. “Me too, I just love my Lucky Bamboo” or “Do you have to bring it in for the winter?” Any how it has been doing well for me in Utah of course it doesn’t grow to gigantic proportions here but it does grow here as can be seen by the pictures I have posted here.

Nathan
A Fagesia nitida seedling that I started this year. Despite what I have read and experienced with other seedlings in this batch this one seems to defy all warnings about not being able to handle high temperatures. It seemed unphased by the 2 weeks plus of 100+ temperatures I had this summer.

Nathan
My Phyllostachys rubromarginata from what I have read in colder climates this one tends to be a lot more manageable I am containing this one by rhizome pruning it hasn’t traveled far yet but we will have to see what it’s true character is in a few years.

Herbert’s Garden in La Jolla, California

We wanted to walk through our bamboo grove on a daily basis, while leaving and entering our house. We planted Bambusa vulgaris “Vittata” along side the entry and this is the result.

Mike’s Garden in El Segundo, California

This has been about 2 years into a backyard transformation that required the removal of eight large trees that were outgrowing the yard. Yes, I took them all out myself, roots and all. The planter along the wall was replanted with black bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra), making an elegant privacy hedge. It should continue to run up near the Australian Tree Fern, being constrained by the 60 mil by 24 inch rhizome barrier I bought from Bamboo Headquarters. Just to the right of the tree fern is a transplanted Bambusa Vulgaris ‘Vittata’ which is now sending up some new culms. It should fill in nicely. At the top of the yard is a row of giant timber bamboo, which serves as a wind break and late afternoon sun shade. The vertical photo shows a potted Mexican Weeping Bamboo in the foreground. Also take note of the ceramic bamboo fountain behind the small fish pond in the ground level corner (Bambusa ceramica fountaina!).

Not shown in the photos are several potted golden bamboo, and a Bambusa glaucescens ‘Alphonse-Karr’.

Thanks for the contest. It’s great to see what other people are doing with their bamboo gardens.

Best regards,

Mike

JC’s Garden

Dear fellow bambuseros,

I have over thirty-five varieties of bamboo here in my gardens plus many rare aloes and agaves and other succulents. Attached are some pictures of my green Vivax grove which has about two hundred canes. I started this little forest from a single cane in a 15 gallon pot which I stuck in the ground in 1989. Also attached, some pictures of my gold Vivax and a couple other varieties underneath. I also have a giant 40` high Beechy clump and many other kinds which I am now forgetting the names of. I thank Mr. Evans for all the help and advice he has given me over the past 30 years. I certainly appreciate what you guys are doing down there in Vista.

P.S. I also slipped a picture of a Sanguinelli Blood Orange I grew this spring.

Laurie’s Garden in Valencia, California

Please view the two photos of our bamboo Alphonse Karr which we purchased in March. They provide the perfect ambiance for our pond and back yard. the bamboo has done spectacularly well in our climate. We planted two in the giant square turquoise pots and the rest along the wall to screen out our neighbor and give us privacy. We have been very happy with the growth to this point, and we’re looking forward to an eventual height of 20 feet or more. Thanks again for the fantastic website and the wonderful specimen plants.

Roy’s Bamboo Garden, Florida’s Suncoast, Tampa, Florida

RoyR1My goal for my bamboo garden is to have the largest bamboo culms, for a particular species, without adding fertilizer, chemicals, or additional water. I just use the Florida Viagra Water that falls from the sky. Here’s some pictures of 2 of my bamboos: Dendrocalamus asper and Bambusa oldhamii.

Nicholas’ Garden in Dublin, CA

I’ve always loved bamboo, so when we redid our backyard a few years ago, we planted bambusa multiplex to provide screening from our neighbors and vertical plants in the narrow walkway from our garage to the backyard.

In this landscape design we used the timber bamboo for a privacy screen both in the back yard and side yard. It was very effective and the clients loves it.

Black and running Bamboo-purchased from you about (2) years ago. Good stuff-in other words beautiful. Using Bamboo for fencing and back ground to accent many other plants. My friends want starts from the black, I tell them to buy it, although I did give one of my artist friends a 6ft (1 inch diameter) for his art hanging. Thanks, Denver M

Steve’s Garden in Garden City, KS

This is picture of my garden area, I’ve had the bamboo since last sept., and this years weather has not been to kind on it. received a lot of snow this year and also had a severe ice storm that laid everything over, so as you can see it is doing pretty well. I am located in Garden City KS and hopefully will get my whole area taken over by the bamboo. Thanks Steve R

Linda’s Garden in New Orleans

GardenWe live in the Uptown area of New Orleans where houses were built within inches of property lines. The adage “Good fences make good neighbors” defines our neighborhood.

We lost our planting of hollies as well as our fence during hurricane Katrina. The hollies never really did that well in the narrow space we had along the driveway and often had gaps in the foliage where we needed coverage the most.

As our neighbor’s windows look directly into our house we needed something to offer us some badly needed privacy in a hurry. Zoning restrictions limit us to a 7 foot fence height but a “living fence” has no restrictions.

We decided to plant Alphonse Karr along the fence in August of 2006 and could not be more pleased with the result. The first picture was taken in September of 2006, the second one the following April, the third in July and the last two on August 1st.

We love this bamboo!

Gianetto’s Bamboo Garden in Los Angeles, CA

The best way to present the garden is with some before/after photos showing the dramatic growth. All seven species of bamboo were planted in the first few days of March 2007. The final photos are in the last few weeks of July (five months of growth).

Below is the planted pot of f. robusta, and p. nigra ‘henon’ on the right. You can see the f. rufa on the far left:

Bamboo Garden: Karen S.

KarenSI have bamboo on three sides of my studio. The image (east side) is bamboo I transplanted from a Collection my Grandmother planted about 100 years Ago. It borders the studio on the East side for about 25 feet in length and creates a wonder canopy of cool. This year it has grown to about 15 feet tall, And 2 inches in diameter. It has been in the ground in it’s current location For three years….

On the image (yard), is a stand of Castilian I purchased from you I guess two years ago. This year it has exploded. The stacked rocks are the work Of my husband, as is the Landscaping.

I have fond memories of a visit to your nursery. Just wish I had more room to plant more bamboo.

I found an image from 2005. This is the bamboo planted, with The barrier. In two years the Building went up and the bamboo Tripled in size. I think the change in the bamboo is remarkable…
